SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) along with the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding travelers to ensure they have a REAL ID-compliant form of identification as the federal enforcement deadline of May 7, 2025, draws closer.
In less than three weeks, Vermont residents will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification if they want to board an airplane for a domestic flight. A REAL ID driver’s license and the Vermont Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) have a star in the upper right corner.
“REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the states and the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver licenses and identification cards,” said Charles Woyat, TSA Federal Security Director for Vermont. “These improvements aim to prevent terrorists from evading detection using fraudulent IDs.”
"Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV) takes pride in providing easy access to the air travel, so we are reminding our passengers of the REAL ID deadline for boarding domestic flights,” said Nic Longo, Director of Aviation. “To help keep our TSA security checkpoint lines moving efficiently.
Vermont residents are encouraged to upgrade to a REAL ID compliant license if their current license lacks the star. Remember, a standard license without the star won’t be accepted for domestic flights and you will face delays, additional screening and the possibility of not being permitted into the secure area of the airport.
“The Vermont DMV is here to help residents obtain their REAL ID-compliant license and ensure they’re ready for upcoming travel and federal requirements," said Vermont DMV Commissioner Andrew Collier. “To get your REAL ID-compliant license, go to the DMV website to make an appointment or visit your local DMV office with the required documents that are listed on the website. We encourage everyone to make the upgrade sooner rather than later to avoid delays as the May 7, 2025, deadline approaches.”
Required documents include one proof of identity (passport or U.S. birth certificate), proof of legal presence for non-U.S. citizens, two proofs of Vermont residency, your social security card (if applicable), and your current driver’s license if you’re exchanging one issued by another U.S. state.
TSA travel document checkers at BTV and Rutland Sate Airport are currently handing travelers a REAL ID reminder notice if they do not have a REAL ID.
