PHILADELPHIA—It has been an extremely busy summer at Philadelphia International Airport with two days so far exceeding 50,000 individuals coming through the security checkpoints.
“Checkpoint volume has seen quite an increase at Philadelphia, where we have seen a noticeable increase in checkpoint throughput this summer,” said Gerardo Spero, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “On June 24th we recorded the ninth busiest day in our history at 50,925. It marked the first time we have screened more than 50,000 people in 16 years. Then on August 1st we screened 50,270 people, which was the 17th busiest day of all time here at Philadelphia. It marked only the second time since 2008 that we have screened more than 50,000 people in a single day.”
Checkpoint throughput has been high nationwide, with TSA officers having screened 3.01 million travelers on July 7th, which was the busiest day in TSA history and marked the very first time that more than 3 million travelers were screened on a single day.
“I commend our officers for their continued vigilance and focus on the mission during what is turning out to be one of the busiest summers on record,” Spero said. “I hope that travelers will take an extra moment to thank our officers for working during this busy period to allow passengers to go on vacation and enjoy their summer travel.”
